How to Scan for Login Credentials

Last updated: August 22, 2023

Your web browsers store numerous usernames and passwords to make logging into websites more convenient. However, these credentials are often stored in an unsecured format, making them vulnerable to theft by malware or unauthorized users.

Activate Security's Login Credentials Scanner helps you discover all saved passwords across your installed web browsers, giving you the option to secure them properly or remove them.

How to Scan for Login Credentials

  1. Open Activate Security - Launch the application on your computer
  2. Navigate to Password Vault - Click on the "Password Vault" or "Browsing Tracks" section from the main menu
  3. Start the Scan - Click the "Scan for Login Credentials" button
  4. Wait for Results - The scan will search through all installed browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, etc.)
  5. Review Findings - Once complete, you'll see a list of all saved usernames and passwords

What Browsers Are Scanned?

The credential scanner checks the following web browsers:

  • Google Chrome
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Safari (macOS)
  • Opera
  • Brave
  • Other Chromium-based browsers

What to Do After Scanning

Once the scan is complete, you have three options for each credential found:

1. Move to Vault

Transfer the credentials to Activate Security's encrypted Password Vault. This option:

  • Removes credentials from the browser's insecure storage
  • Encrypts them with military-grade encryption
  • Makes them available across all your devices
  • Enables secure auto-fill functionality

2. Delete

Remove the credentials entirely from your browser. Choose this option if:

  • You no longer use the account
  • The password is old or compromised
  • You want a fresh start with new credentials

3. Keep in Browser

Leave the credentials in your browser's storage. While convenient, this is the least secure option.

Security Warning: Browsers store passwords in formats that can be easily extracted by malware or anyone with physical access to your computer. We strongly recommend moving important credentials to the Password Vault.

Best Practices

  • Regular Scans - Run credential scans monthly to find newly saved passwords
  • Prioritize Important Accounts - Move banking, email, and social media credentials to the vault first
  • Remove Old Accounts - Delete credentials for services you no longer use
  • Update Weak Passwords - Use this opportunity to identify and update weak passwords
